Thanks for your excellent web site, I've tried others, but yours is the most helpful and was recommended to me by another member, who has used 'HouseCarers' in the past. Hope everything works out fine with my trip to Europe in March. I have suspended my 'profile' but would like to keep it for possible use in the future. Hope this will not clutter up your website... We have found our house sitter. Your site is wonderful. We had 8 very qualified responses and actually had a hard time choosing. We will definitely recommend your site to everyone. Thanks again.

We have 2 great dogs (Labradoodle, Havanese), Leeloo and Molly. Leeloo would need walks every day but Molly is a house dog only

Book Review - The House Sitting Book, Travel the World and Your Lodging is Free

Our long time housesitter members Josie and Conrad Schneider Housecarers profile for:Josie and Contrad - (Cultureconnectors) have released an e-book jammed packed with great tips on how to land housesits and line-up house sit after housesit. It is always great to hear stories like theirs - and learn proven tips for successful housesit applications.

The House Sitting Book Travel the World and Your Lodging is Free I wrote THE HOUSE SITTING BOOK to help you succeed at winning the best assignments. Tips like how to word your profile – and its heading – so that homeowners will trust you with the care of their home. I give you real examples of good and bad profiles along with the explanation of exactly why the wording works or doesn’t. (One mistake is posting a profile with your wants and needs instead of illustrating your experience and readiness to care for someone else’s beloved home.) I also show you how to reveal truisms about yourself that make your profile pop.

And it’s essential to sign up for the daily email alerts. One tip tells you how to respond to desired house sitting posts so that yours is among the first to arrive in the homeowner’s inbox. And I show you exactly how to word your letter so that it stands out. The prime assignments can prompt a hundred or more replies, so yours needs to be stellar – and very personal. Included in THE HOUSE SITTING BOOK are two actual letters of mine that won us prime assignments in Copenhagen and near Washington D.C. in the United States. I give examples of why my letters grabbed the homeowner’s attention, (out of the nearly two hundred letters they each received), like how I commented on items in one homeowner’s photos that were near and dear to her heart.

My husband Conrad and I live the house sitting lifestyle, going from one assignment to the next, with time in between to travel and discover new countries and cultures. We are not wealthy people. Conrad is retired and I am a freelance writer and blogger. And because we have learned how to travel on a tight budget, I also present tips, including my 3-Step-Method to finding low-cost off-the-beaten-path lodging that is family-owned. These are the sweet places that we remember long after leaving because the generous owners share local lore, food and historical information as well as friendship – like the 350-year-old Gasthof Locher in the Italian Dolomites where we helped bring the cows down the hillside from the upper pasture, or the Catalan Cal Jepa apartment owned by a restaurateur who gave us a personal tour of his vineyard and fruit orchards.

THE HOUSE SITTING BOOK is a 100-page downloadable ebook packed with my inspiration, Conrad’s analytical tables and graphs, as well as fun-facts sprinkled about, (like: Norwegians drink more coffee than any other people on the planet), and 2 questionnaires which delve into your needs and motives for house sitting and traveling. There are charts for cost-of-living and transportation costs. There are tips for using public transportation and rental cars. I talk about the differences in house sitting assignments in terms of urban vs. remote, and more importantly, what that means for you. For instance, Conrad and I accepted an extremely remote house sit in Spain for an off-the-grid mountainside home. I show you photos and explain the good and the bad, so you can judge if remote house sitting is right for you.

I devote one section of the book to contracts, a very important aspect of your house sitting happiness! Among the many other subjects covered in THE HOUSE SITTING BOOK are language, visas, travel hacking and technology.

Here’s what others are saying:
“If you've considered house sitting as a vacation option or even a lifestyle, The House Sitting Book is a very comprehensive resource to get you started. Regardless of your web expertise, Josie makes the house sitting and travel lifestyle accessible with tips and tricks for finding and landing (and getting the most out of) house sitting gigs, as well as providing lots of tips for stress-free travel and experiencing new cultures. You can tell Josie is an expert, as most of the material is written from personal experience, with contextual anecdotes peppered throughout.” -Nora Dunn, The Professional Hobo

"This book is a gem! Whether you are in "the lifestyle" or merely considering it, you will find tips and facts that make this a must-read book. Not only is The House Sitting Book full of all kinds of information, it is well written and researched. It will cut your time in locating a house to sit and help you get assignments faster." -- Joan Sheridan, U.S.A.

I invite you into my world so that you too can reap the rewards – and fun – of house sitting. I wish you epic and safe travels! Click HERE to read more about THE HOUSE SITTING BOOK.

Retired house sitters from Central Victoria skip the tourist trail, enjoy the pets, and soak up the local communities

Here is a photo taken on our 48th Wedding Anniversary which was last March. We were staying on Kangaroo Island and as we both have a bit of a passion for lighthouses thought how appropriate to climb to the top of Cape Willoughby Lighthouse on our special day.

Having just completed a wonderful seven week house sit in Tasmania, we are now looking forward to a four month house sit in England later in the year. Thank you for giving us so much pleasure. We look forward to more house sits in 2013.

We live in Central Victoria.

Mike and I decided to house sit as it was a way for us to see the world and become part of the community in which we house sat.

We have travelled as tourists before, but now we like to stay in the one spot, look after the animals and absorb the atmosphere. part of the community in which we house sat.

We look forward to more of the same next year Lyn and Mike (username Serena)

I have found your site very helpful and have just completed a house sit very successfully for 6 weeks in Napier New Zealand ...thank you ...I am now looking for my next house sit ...

Housecarers:
Great news about the housesit. It is always good to hear stories like yours. Where are you from? and what are your main reasons for housesitting?

I have my own house just outside of Dunedin new Zealand, and my reasons for house sitting was I list my partner in an accident and then my small dog died , so I felt without any ties, now was the time to do house sitting, and its a great way to catch up with my friends without the hassle of staying with them, so I pick places where I know people and then have a holiday without the accommodation expense. I think I will work my way to an overseas house sit away from new Zealand and Australia.......Cheers Jenni

English Expats visit UK from their Lourmarin French Village Home and return to Doggy well and happy -- and a cooked dinner.

Megan & Marty (Happy2B1) looked after our house and dog in France for a week while we visited the UK. They were a delightful, interesting couple and made a great job of their assignment with us - the garden was tended, the house immaculate, and the dog well and happy - they even cooked dinner for us the night we returned. Anyone booking them for a similar assignment will be lucky!!
What a treat for dog-lovers ... large house, with swimming pool, on a hill 7/8 minutes walk from the village of Lourmarin, which is designated as one of the most beautiful villages in France, with a strong cafe society and many shops and galleries. Lourmarin is in the Luberon, and we are surrounded by hills and woods, with spectacular views. It is also convenient for a visit to Apt, Isle- sur-le-Sorgue, and Aix-en-Provence. The weekly market is on Friday... View ad for dog-sitter Lourmarin France

Wanderbird takes a break from Queen Charlotte Islands to look after your home and pets for the opportunity to explore

I wanted to let you know that it has been a pleasure being a part of Housecarers. I live on a small island (Queen Charlotte Islands) about 100 kms of the northwest coast of British Columbia tucked under Alaska and as beautiful as it is I need to get off the island occasionally. I housesit twice a year for several months each time and I love the opportunity housesitting offers to spend the time to learn about the culture and people of the area I am visiting with these extended housesits. I have never had a problem with a housesit(and to my knowledge no one has had a problem with me)from your site and I have several repeat clients. I do due diligence as do my homeowners so there are rarely any surprises. Thanks for the service and your great customer service! Smiles Carolyn (Wanderbird)

Housecarers: Great news about the housesit. It is always good to hear stories like yours. Where is the housesit? And what are your main reasons for housesitting? Where are you from?

Celeste: It's in a small town about 90 minutes from Seattle, Washington which is the city my husband and I lived in before we set out to travel (three years ago). This house sitting job allows us to be back near family and friends at a time when our family is growing (my niece and her husband are adopting a baby), and in a way that gives us time to think about where we want to travel next. (The assignment is for a full year.) We're thrilled!
